Super stressful though i bet.

I think dixiebelle might be right about the hen needing more time. Also some hens will take anything (ie Fluffy, who was sitting on a knuckle bone!!) and others not at all - when Buffy hatched the eggs we got from a few different breeds - three were the same, one different - she got rid of the different one straight out. took one look at it and thought "not mine" so it just depends. I'd happily lend you Fluffy to bring them up - be lovely to see her with 12 chicks under her big ol' fluffy bum!! She's still brooding away, poor love.Jacquelinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09467803584504473036noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2847439704434651716.post-55491083319514797122011-10-14T12:22:34.803+11:002011-10-14T12:22:34.803+11:00Brings back the memories. :)

I bet the kids were squealing with excitement when some hatched in the car, LOL.

I tried incubating some eggs recently, but our new rooster must not be ready. We bought him as an Australorp, but seems to have red hackles developing so is probably a cross. Beautiful temperament though.

I hope your fluffies (aren't they so cute) turn out to be a healthy batch, scratching around the yard before you know it. :)Chris https://www.blogger.com/profile/13715819899708384147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2847439704434651716.post-59205865603725397262011-10-13T18:48:27.274+11:002011-10-13T18:48:27.274+11:00You did well to get such a great result. I AM a mad chook woman :)

I put some rare brahma eggs under my SLW a month or so ago but I had to move her and she abandoned them after a few days. I'd lent my incubators to a friend so had to get him to do a mad mercy dash with one of them. Only one hatched in the end but luckily my neighbours had a broody so we tucked it under her and she is looking after it. (her I hope)

I have more eggs today and the SLW is broody again but I'm not sure whether to trust her. I certainly won't move her again.greenfumbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08157970942128503098noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2847439704434651716.post-50406357907348643642011-10-13T16:51:17.950+11:002011-10-13T16:51:17.950+11:00I'm enjoying watching yours grow too dixiebell...I'm enjoying watching yours grow too dixiebelle! It wasn't ideal, and lesson learnt now, but yes, perhaps she needed to feel them moving around under her for a few days first rather than have them just appearing! Although I have read many times of other people popping day-olds under a broody hen and she takes them, so I thought it would work.

They are ever so cute though!mountainwildlifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05697065701317854063noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2847439704434651716.post-56832278185330085232011-10-13T14:49:58.153+11:002011-10-13T14:49:58.153+11:00Super cute, but oh, what a drama! Do you think maybe if the eggs weren't just hatching under the broody chook that she would have handled it better, given a bit more time?? Hope they all do OK, it's been such a joy having baby chookens around...dixiebellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03891290324250395382noreply@blogger.com
